A Mustard Seed

"The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches." -Matthew 13:31-32 NIV

The mustard seed is small. However, our Bible uses this tiny seed to illustrate how big God is. He only asks that you believe. If the smallest consideration of the truth of Jesus enters a person’s heart, God can change that life. One person can tell another and the seeds of the Gospel can swell and spread and grow until an entire kingdom is created. That is what God says, and I believe Him. I love the way he tells us stories and uses everyday, tiny, seemingly insignificant things to illustrate to us how powerful He is. We seem to underestimate the smaller things in life. Those small things can turn into something that means the most.

God began to put a story in my heart that began with a seed. As time went on, it began to grow until it became a tree. The tree then began to bear fruit. The fruit contained more seeds, and so it grows on and on. I underestimated the power that accepting Jesus could make in my life and others. So many times, we settle for much less than we could become, if living for His purpose. Perhaps you feel too small in the world to make a difference? God views us each, individually as if we are the only person in the world. He is able to love us in a way that is hard for us to understand. So, we limit what is possible.

Sharing your story and the hope found in Jesus is like planting a mustard seed. That same seed was once planted in our heart. We may never know the impact our words or actions for God’s spoken purpose can produce. Those tiny seeds can save lives, both here and for eternity. The Bible speaks of the mustard seed several times. He speaks of a grain of mustard seed. Not even the whole seed! Our little can be his lot. God can make it mean everything, forever and always. Mustard seed faith (trust and belief) can move mountains (comfort in the midst of our very large problems in life) and produce trees (strength and protection) that provides a home for small birds (that would be us, safe in His hands).

He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you." -Matthew 17:20 ESV
